A clean home feels fantastic, but standard dusting and vacuuming often leave behind hidden buildup. Over time, overlooked spots accumulate dust, bacteria, and allergens that impact your indoor air quality and home efficiency.

Target these five forgotten areas during your next cleaning routine to achieve a truly pristine living space.

1. The Tops of Door Frames and Kitchen Cabinets

Dust settles on every horizontal surface, especially the ones above eye level. The tops of door frames, window casings, and kitchen cabinets are notorious dust traps. If left uncleaned, this grease-infused dust in the kitchen turns into a sticky residue that is difficult to remove.

  • The Fix: Use a microfiber cloth attached to an extendable duster. For kitchen cabinets, wipe the tops with a mixture of warm water and dish soap to cut through the grease.

2. Washing Machine and Dishwasher Drums

Your cleaning appliances need cleaning too. Soap scum, hard water deposits, and hair clip onto the inside of your washing machine and dishwasher, creating a breeding ground for mold and musty odors.

  • The Fix: Run an empty hot cycle on your washing machine with a cup of white vinegar or a specialized washing machine cleaner. For the dishwasher, clear the food trap filter and run a heavy cycle with a bowl of vinegar placed on the top rack.

3. Light Switches, Door Knobs, and Remote Controls

These high-touch surfaces host thousands of microbes daily, yet they are rarely included in standard wiping routines. Disinfecting these spots is crucial for preventing the spread of seasonal illnesses.

  • The Fix: Spray a microfiber cloth with an isopropyl alcohol solution or a disinfectant spray, then wipe down the surfaces. Never spray liquids directly onto electronic remotes or light switches to avoid electrical damage.

4. Window Tracks and Sliders

We clean the glass but often ignore the tracks. Dust, dead insects, and pollen collect in window and sliding door tracks. When condensation builds up, this debris turns into mud, which ruins the tracks and creates mold.

  • The Fix: Vacuum up loose debris using a crevice tool. Sprinkle baking soda into the track, spray it with white vinegar, let it fizz for five minutes, and scrub the grime away with an old toothbrush.

5. Beneath and Behind Major Appliances

Your refrigerator and stove generate heat and attract crumbs, pet hair, and dust bunnies. Dust buildup on refrigerator coils forces the appliance to work harder, increasing your energy bills and shortening its lifespan.

  • The Fix: Pull appliances away from the wall safely. Vacuum the coils and the floor area completely, then wipe down the surrounding walls before sliding the units back into place.
